![]() Golf Ball Shoot (Rim fire Pistols) |
|
|
Match Director: Manny Carter
These matches are shot at the
Indoor Range, usually on the second Thursday of the month at 7 PM.
All targets are shot at 50 feet, in two phases. Each phase uses 50
rounds of ammunition shot at targets consisting of 10 golf balls
mounted on golf tees, 4 tennis balls hung from string and paper
targets.
Shooters start with the golf balls.
Once all the golf balls have been dispatched, they move to the
tennis balls. After hitting each tennis ball once, they move to two
paper targets. Ten points are scored for each golf and tennis ball
hit. The paper targets are scored based on the number of hits in
the scoring area, so the shooter who gets through the golf and
tennis balls expending the fewest rounds has a potential advantage.
The fee for the match is $2 for members and $4 for nonmembers.
Phase I: Participants are
given 8 minutes to fire 50 rounds at the targets in the order given
above. This lengthy time period allows everyone to relax and work
on his or her skills.
Phase II: Participants use
the same targets, shot in the same order, with the same amount of
ammunition as phase I. The only thing that changes is the timing.
The first 6 rounds are fired in 22 seconds, the next 6 rounds in 20
seconds and the third set of 6 rounds in 18 seconds. This pattern
continues for a total of eight timings, each decreasing by 2 seconds
until the final 8 rounds are shot in 8 seconds.
These matches have served to
increase shooting skills far more than anything expected. When we
first began these shoots it was rare for half the shooters to hit
all the golf and tennis ball targets consistently. As time has
passed and skill levels improved, the longtime participants often
have so many rounds left for the paper targets that the hits are
difficult to score. Many discussions start with the question "How
many rounds went through this hole?"

We built it, and boy, do they come,
and come, and come. A recent Golf Ball Shoot drew a crowd of 19
shooters and several spectators.
Yes, I said spectators.
Oh! I'm sorry, I thought you knew.
Not only is this the second best thing one can do on a Thursday
evening, it also qualifies as a fantastic spectator sport.
What you have is akin to a golf
tournament, a tennis match, a bulls eye shoot and the St.
Valentine's day massacre (for various ball species) rolled into one
event that you can enjoy from the relative safety of a glass
enclosed viewing room.
Notice that I said "relative
safety," for no one is truly safe from the addictive thrill of the
GOLF BALL SHOOT'.
Others have thought, as you may be
thinking now; "No problem. I can watch a few times, go
home and never look back. Maybe even shoot once or twice and just
walk away."
That may be your plan, but the next
thing you know you're slipping out of the house at all hours,
meeting unsavory characters in little out of the way gun shops. You
are buying target pistols, ammunition, red dot sights, special
triggers and who knows what else to feed that insatiable urge to
SHOOT GOLF BALLS.'
Lest you think this not be true,
come to the club the rare time a golf ball shoot is canceled. You
will witness men and women alike, milling around mumbling
unintelligibly. Some of those who have been addicted the longest
have been known to attempt to get their fix by shooting paper
targets on their own. Of course, this only serves to deepen the
urge to SHOOT GOLF BALLS.' I have even heard that some have gone
home, set golf balls on the back yard fence and thrown rocks at them
to try to quell the craving.
So, before coming out to watch or
shoot, be forewarned: The Golf Ball Shoot is
a very addictive habit. It has been known
to destroy lives.
We are in the process of setting up
a hot line for those who find themselves doing almost anything to
stay involved in the sport until the next match. They look
longingly at the house payment money, or drive slowly past the local
pawn shop with their wife's jewelry or husband's chain saw in the
trunk, yearning for the funds to buy just one more piece of GOLF
BALL HUNTING' equipment. Please do not hesitate. At the first sign
of aberrant behavior, pick up the phone and call us. We now have
two Golf Ball Shoots each month in order to minimize the withdrawal
period between matches. We will help you get through until
the next scheduled Golf Ball Shoot.
